Science of Purple Water

  • Did you know that water changes color based on the pH of the water when testing (reagent) drops are added to the water? Alkaline water is blue to purple in color. This is a scientific test that indicates how acidic or alkaline your water is, and how it is changed by electric ionisation.

  • Electrolysis cannot occur unless there is some amount of conductive minerals (electrolytes) in the water. Pure water cannot be ionized. Most tap water contains conductive minerals – but water treated with reverse osmosis systems to remove contaminants needs to be re-mineralised before it can be ionised.
  • Ionisation changes the Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) of tap water from a positive (oxidizing or rusting) value of from +200 to +500 to a negative (antioxidant, reducing) value of from -200 to -800. The difference or absolute change is dependent on the characteristics of the source water more than any other factor, including electrode size or power.
  • Electrolysis splits the water molecule into H+ and OH-, and separates acidic ions from alkaline minerals. The resulting alkaline water contains free hydroxyl ions (OH-) as well as alkaline mineral hydroxides (CaOH-, MgOH-, KOH-, etc.) that are known to be highly bio-available. pH of ionized alkaline water ranges from 8.0 to greater than 11.0 depending on the source water.
  • Splitting the water with electrolysis changes the structure of the water molecular clusters. Tap and bottled water molecules typically cluster in groups of 15-20 molecules. Ionized water clusters are smaller (5-6 per group) and are negatively charged. The smaller size and negative charge is thought to make the water easier for the cells to absorb through the aquaporin channels.
  • Alkaline, ionised water can also be created electro-chemically with various filtration media. While filtration-based ionisers do not reach the level of negative ORP that electric ionisers can, they do cause a significant change, reducing ORP by 500 to 800 pts. They also create alkaline water, and are typically more affordable, making it possible for more people to drink healthy water.

Oxidation = Rusting = Ageing

Oxidation is what turns an apple brown after it is cut or causes metal to rust. Rust weakens metal and signifies the deterioration of the apple. The process of oxidation “steals” electrons from the surface being oxidised. The oxidising potential of a substance can be expressed in +ORP and measures the concentration of OH+ ions or oxidising agents.

A “reducing” agent is simply something that inhibits or slows the process of oxidation. The reducing agent does this by “donating” an electron. When we measure a something’s oxidation reduction potential, it is expressed in terms of -ORP and measures the concentration of reducing agents - free electrons expressed in millivolts. The abundance of free electrons can be donated to a free radical that is positively charged ... or missing and electron. In its most basic form a reducing agent is an “antioxidant” – reducing oxidation.

The ORP of most tap water in the USA is between +200 to +600mv and thus is an oxidising agent. High pH ionized water demonstrates a -ORP and thus is a reducing agent or “antioxidant”. Most bottled waters are very acidic (low pH) and also have higher ORPs (over +400mv).

Antioxidants are found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and are well known in the nutritional supplement juices and pills product range. More powerful than any amount of supplemental antioxidants or fruits and vegetables is the antioxidant power provided by ionised, alkaline water.

The term pH refers to “potential hydrogen” and is a measurement that indicates the level of hydrogen in a substance. It is measured by the pH scale. Proper body pH is a critically important factor in good health. As you can see from the chart above, most water we drink is NOT alkaline. Drinking alkaline water is a simple way to add alkaline mineral hydroxide buffers to your diet while staying hydrated at the same time.

The term ORP refers to “Oxidation Reduction Potential” (also referred to as “Redox”). Most leading water researchers agree that while the alkaline pH of ionised water is good and important to health, ORP is even more important. Alteration to the OPR is what causes the micro-clustering, antioxidant and oxygenating effects in ionized water.

In electrical terms, potential energy can be measured and the term “potential,” when describing ORP, refers to electrical potential as expressed in millivolts. This potential is measured in water using an ORP meter which detects the very slight voltage in water. In actuality, this is a measure of the presence of oxidizing or reducing agents by their specific electrical charge, thus termed Oxidation Reduction “Potential”. High pH water has more “reducing” agents (-ORP) and low pH water has more oxidising agents (+ORP).

What the Experts have to Say!

Dr. Richard Cohen, MD Natural Anti-Aging Specialist

“Other than natural glacier water, alkaline, antioxidant water is the best water we can drink. Drinking ionized antioxidant water will help bring the body into balance by hydrating and providing alkaline buffers.

Our body becomes a sink for this excess acidity and it is one of the reasons for disease in our body.

Bones demineralise, our ability to create energy decreases, immune system becomes suppressed, inflammation, aches and pains increase. It’s not a good thing to be acid. We need to understand what is and is not water. Modern civilization thinks of water as tea, soda, milk, energy drinks, coffee. Fluids are not water. What comes out of our tap and what is in bottled water may structurally be the water molecule, but once we understand how water exists in its natural state, we realize that is not necessarily the water our bodies evolved to exist on.”

Robert O. Young, Naturopath and Author of: The pH Miracle

“Those willing to look again, and with clear eyes, will be rewarded with the secrets to permanent health. We can heal ourselves by changing the environment inside our bodies. Potentially harmful invaders, then, will have nowhere to grow and will become harmless.”

Dr. Robert Atkins, noted author, health and diet expert.

“The cells and fluids in most people’s bodies... are overly acidic. This can cause a lot of health problems. It prevents your body from neutralizing and disposing of harmful, poisonous toxins and leaves you more susceptible to the cell-damaging free radical oxidation that leads to cancer and other diseases.”

Dr. Theodore Baroody Author, Alkalize or Die

“I have administered over 5000 gallons of this water for about every health situation imaginable. I feel that restructured alkaline water can benefit everyone.”

Arthur Guyton, MD, Author Textbook of Medical Physiology

“The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body. The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are acidic. Since our bodies do not manufacture alkalinity, we must supply the alkalinity from an outside source to keep us from being acidic and dying.”
